How To Set Ideal Wind/Using Hunt Strategy

Ideal Wind tells the app which wind directions work for each stand or blind. It is part of HuntPlan, so it becomes available once HuntPlan is added to your account. Once it is set, the pin on the map shows whether the wind at that spot is good or bad for that stand right now. To look ahead, open the pin and choose the Wind tab, where you can also change the Ideal Wind if needed.

Which pins can have an Ideal Wind

Any pin type in the Stands and Blinds category: Climbing Stand, Duck Blind, Elevated Blind, Ground Blind, Hang On Stand, Ladder Stand, Lookout Tower, Shooting House, and Tree Stand. These types are not in the first row of pin types. When you pick a type, tap More in the Type header to open the Stands and Blinds category. If your stand is saved as a Generic pin, edit the pin and change its type to one of the stand or blind types first.

Set Ideal Wind for a Pin

You can set an Ideal Wind on a brand-new pin, on a stand or blind pin you already have, or on a Generic pin once you change its type. Pick the path that matches.

Create a new pin with an Ideal Wind

  1. Open Maps and tap Add a Pin.
  2. In the Type header, tap More, then choose a type from the Stands and Blinds section. Place and name the pin and save it.
  3. Tap the new pin, tap the Wind tab, then tap Set Ideal Wind.
  4. On the wind wheel, tap every direction that works for that stand (up to seven), then tap Save.

Add an Ideal Wind to an existing stand or blind pin

  1. Open Maps and tap your stand or blind pin.
  2. Tap the Wind tab, then tap Set Ideal Wind. (From Hunt Strategy, tap any pin that shows a question mark.)
  3. A wind wheel appears around your pin. Tap the compass circles for every direction that works for that stand: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW. You can select up to seven.
  4. Tap Save.

Turn a Generic pin into an Ideal Wind pin

Many hunters saved their stands as Generic pins before Ideal Wind existed. A Generic pin has no Wind tab, so change its type first. You keep the pin's location, name, and photos.

  1. Open Maps and tap the Generic pin.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. In the Type header, tap More, then change the pin type to the matching stand or blind type (for example, Ladder Stand or Ground Blind) and tap Save.
  4. Tap the pin again. The Wind tab is now there. Tap Set Ideal Wind, choose your directions, and tap Save.

Read the Wind tab

The top of the Wind tab shows the wind at your stand right now and whether it is Good or Bad for the Ideal Wind you set.

Below that is a seven-day outlook. Each day is split into Morning (3am to 9am), Midday (9am to 3pm), and Evening (3pm to 9pm). A block is marked favorable when at least half of its hours have a wind that matches your Ideal Wind. Each block also shows the average wind speed and direction for that time of day.

Where Ideal Wind is used

Once an Ideal Wind is set, it shows up in three places:

  • The pin on the map. The stand or blind pin shows whether the current wind is good or bad for it.
  • The Wind tab. Open the pin and tap Wind for the seven-day Morning, Midday, and Evening outlook.
  • Hunt Strategy. Hunt Prediction uses each stand's Ideal Wind to mark which stands the forecast favors for the day and hour you pick. Stands with no Ideal Wind show a question mark. See Hunt Planning "HP" for how Hunt Strategy works.

A few notes on those secondary spots. Forecasts report wind in 16 directions. If the forecast says NNE and you selected N or NE, that counts as ideal. The same rule applies to every in-between direction (ENE, ESE, SSE, SSW, WSW, WNW, NNW).

  • Pins inside a hidden folder do not appear in Hunt Strategy. Unhide the folder to include them.
  • Ideal Wind checks the wind at the stand, not along your walk in. Use Navigate to Pin to plan your approach.
