EDGE 4: Too Many Pictures

Not sure if this is your device? This article is for the EDGE 4 cameras (Edge 4 NW & Edge 4 First Lite). Double-check this info or click here to visit our "Identify My Device" page before you continue.

Your EDGE 4 uses a passive infrared (PIR) sensor — it fires when it detects heat movement. Wind-blown vegetation, sunlight, and shadows all count as "movement" to the sensor. Here's how to cut down on empty photos.

1.  Stabilize the Mount

Strap the camera to a large, stable tree that won't sway in the wind. A swaying camera = constant false triggers.

2.  Face North (or South)

East or west placement puts the rising/setting sun directly in the sensor's path, causing thermal spikes. North is best.

3.  Set the Camera at the Right Height

Mount 3–4 feet off the ground on a stable surface. Too low = small animals; too high + angled down = shadow and ground temperature false triggers.

4.  Clear Vegetation From the View

Remove all grass, twigs, or small branches in front of the camera before you leave. Even a single twig blowing in the frame will trigger shots all night.

5.  Adjust Detection Settings

  • Lower PIR Sensitivity to Medium or Low.
  • Make sure the camera is in Photo mode, not Multi-Shot or Video.
  • The EDGE 4's Smart Zone and Smart Capture features can help filter out non-animal triggers check that these are configured in your camera settings.

6.  Still Getting False Triggers? Run the Box Test

This test confirms whether the camera itself is misfiring:

  1. Set upload frequency to Immediate.
  2. Place the camera inside a completely sealed, opaque box, facing the longest stretch inside.
  3. Power on and close the box. Leave it undisturbed for one full night.
  4. If no photos are taken the camera is fine; the environment was the trigger.
  5. If photos are taken inside the sealed box contact us with the images.
