Cellular signal strength directly affects connection reliability, upload speed, and battery life. Here are the main causes of weak signal and how to address each.
Natural Obstructions
Mountains, valleys, dense tree cover, and heavy summer foliage all absorb or block cellular signal. Fall and winter (after leaf drop) typically bring improved performance.
Pro Tip: In hilly terrain, ridgetops are your best bet. If leaves are still thick, mount at the edge of a field or clearing rather than deep in the woods.
Weather
Heavy storms, thick cloud cover, and heavy snowfall can temporarily degrade signal. Solar flares can also cause brief, widespread disruptions.
Pro Tip: Not much you can do here — wait for conditions to improve. These disruptions are usually short-lived.
Cell Tower Traffic
High-traffic areas (near highways, towns, events) can cause congestion on local towers, dropping signal strength and upload reliability.
Pro Tip: If you're in a busy area, set upload frequency to more frequent intervals (e.g., 6-hour instead of 24-hour) so the camera sends fewer images per connection.
Low Battery
A weak battery reduces the camera's transmit power — compounding an already marginal signal situation.
Pro Tip: Replace batteries proactively. Lithium AA batteries outperform alkaline in cold weather and maintain voltage longer. External power options are also available at moultrie.com/products/power.
Inherently Weak Coverage Area
Some locations simply have marginal coverage. Because signal fluctuates, a spot showing "2 bars" in testing may drop below connectable levels during actual use.
Pro Tip: If signal is weak, set upload frequency to "Immediate." The camera connects more often but sends fewer photos per trip — greatly reducing dropped uploads. Note that Immediate mode uses more battery.
Tower Changes
Carriers periodically realign antennas, adjust power, or move towers — any of which can reduce signal at your camera's location without warning.
Pro Tip: If signal drops suddenly with no obvious cause, wait a few days and check again. If the problem persists, relocate the camera.
