A well-placed camera means better photos and fewer false triggers. Follow these tips before you strap it to a tree.
1. Face North or South
Avoid east or west — the rising and setting sun will cause frequent false triggers from the PIR sensor. North is ideal.
2. Mount Parallel to the Terrain
Keep the camera level with the ground — not tilted up or down. A level camera maximizes detection range and gives you cleaner photos.
3. Angle 45° to the Trail
Point the camera at a 45-degree angle across the trail rather than directly at it. This gives the sensor more time to detect movement and capture a clean photo before the animal passes.
4. 20–30 Feet from Your Target
This distance gives the best lighting and frame coverage. Too close and you'll clip the animal; too far and the photo loses detail.
5. 3–4 Feet Off the Ground
Use a strong, stable tree that won't sway in wind. Mount at chest height for deer (~4 ft), or lower (~2 ft) for turkey and small game.
6. Level the Camera Vertically
The target should sit in the center of the frame vertically. Tilting down limits detection range; tilting up causes the camera to miss animals entirely.
7. Clear the View
Remove any grass, twigs, or branches within the camera's field of view. Even small movement from vegetation will trigger false shots.
